The Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, in partnership with the City of Matlosana and the Department of Water Affairs continues the quest towards achieving water leaks free communities. Evidence to this is documented through the unrelenting War on Leaks (WoL) Project that remains a viable tool to help communities save water through eradicating leaks at households, educating users about water conservation whilst developing skill and creating jobs for young people.

With the visible presence of WoL recruits attending to a leaking pipe during the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality National Water Week celebration in Kanana Township, it paints an encouraging future in which water awareness campaigns will put more emphasis on. The campaign, which was led by the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Environmental Health Department, was launched by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi in Jouberton Township, Matlosana on November 14, 2013.

District MMC for Environmental Health Cllr. Khaya Ndincede pleads with the community to take heed of the warning to protect earth’s most precious commodity.
“Water scarcity is a global challenge that affects many regions in the world with Southern Africa being the hardest hit. Our country is a water scarce country and it is ranked the 30th driest worldwide with annual rainfall levels about half the world average. In some instances, parts of South Africa have either reached or are fast approaching the point at which all useful fresh water supply will be fully utelised.”

Cllr Ndicede also warns the community to own-up responsibility in water usage and conservation. “Government cannot do it alone. It begins with each and every one of us. There needs to be change in attitude and behavior to use water more wisely. This ensures a reliable supply, which in turn improves the quality of life of all South Africans, and promotes economic development,” Ndincede says.
