Water Week Campaign Educates Maquassie Hills Residents
Over 800 people, including learners, teachers, the community and public authorities from spheres of government participated in the annual Water Week Campaign organized by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in partnership with Maquassie Hills Local Municipality, Department of Water and Sanitation, Sedibeng Water Company and Midvaal Water Company. The theme of the campaign held in Tswelelang Township, Wolmaranstad, on 17 March 2016, was “Water for People, Water by People”.
The Executive Mayor of Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Cllr Boitumelo Pinky Moloi reiterated the message conveyed by stakeholders in the water sector on the stringent necessity to safeguard water as the world’s greatest source of life. “The world over, water is the heartbeat of economic growth. Just as it is a spine in the normal day to day running of a normal household, it is also a catalyst in agricultural and industrial sectors. We need to save as much of it as possible to ensure the survival of businesses to carry the growth of our economy forward.”
Sedibeng and Midvaal Water Companies presented brief lectures about the costs of water purification as well as the hindrances that they normally encounter. Illegal dumping has been identified as a common problem which in most cases affects the supply of clean water. Dumped waste metals flowing through storm water drainage systems find their way to streams, rivers, dams and ultimately end up at purification plants causing excessive damage to machinery, which end up running to millions of rands in repairs or replacements.
The Department of Water and Sanitation, through their massive advertising campaign, have engaged communities countrywide about the need to conserve water as South Africa is among the 30 water scarce countries in the world. As such, communities are urged to minimise consumption of water, maximise rainwater capture and grey-water recycling, protect wetlands and minimise pollution of water resources.
To mark the campaign’s success, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality handed over a Water Pressure-Pump, a Water Storage Tank as well as a Refuse Removal Truck to Gatelapele, Reabona Secondary Schools and Maquassie Hills Local Municipality respectively.
The National Water Week is an awareness campaign by the Department of Water and Sanitation. It serves as a powerful campaign mechanism re-iterating the value of water, the need for sustainable management of this scarce resource and the role water plays in eradicating poverty and under-development in South Africa.

Kenneth David Kaunda (born 1924), first president of Zambia, was a leading figure in his country's independence movement. Until he stepped down in 1991, he maintained his critical position as the leader of a buffer country between white-ruled states in southern Africa and hostile, independent black-ruled states to the north.
