Dear Ladies & Gentlemen
I rise on behalf of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality –the official host of the 2010 National Municipal Games. I am both honoured and humbled by this extraordinarily rare privilege to officially open the proceedings of these important games.
The South African Municipal Sports and Recreation Association is without doubt the leading organization catering for the physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing of local government practitioners, both councilors and municipal workers.
These Games are arguably the most viable platform in our country for social interaction between municipal councilors and officials. More than any other instrument, the SAMSRA Games brings the local government fraternity together, united as one in the spirit of sport and recreation.
By involving these two role-players in sport, the association is making an immense contribution to the creation of a conducive environment for healthy relations between the employer and the employee components in our municipalities.
In recent years, the national municipal games have grown in size, popularity and stature to become one of the most watched sporting activities with a wide following among communities.
Programme Director, the decision by SAMSRA to bring these Games to the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District of the North West Province wouldn’t have come at a better time than now, exactly six (6) weeks after the successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup which our country South Africa organized with style and a near-perfect aplomb.
This District of ours is proud to have been part of that month-long football spectacle and bear the honour of being rated the best Public Viewing Area or PVA in the North West Province through the town of Makwassie.
This particular city – Potchefstroom, was the official base camp for the team that went on to become the ultimate champions by lifting the coveted World Cup trophy on the 11th July 2010, which is Spain. This speaks volumes about the quality of our facilities in this city and other towns in our District.
Importantly, it must be noted that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the SAMSRA national games. As a result, we in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region of the Platinum Province are delighted to be associated with such an impressive milestone in the history of these inter-municipal games.
As a District, we commend the collective leadership of SAMSRA for choosing us to play host to this the tenth edition of this knock-out tournament. And almost all indications are that this year’s national games will be the biggest in the history of SAMSRA.
It is all systems go for the 2010 edition of the national municipal games.
Over the next few days, the eyes of the entire country will be focused on this southern tip of the North West Province as men and women constituting teams from 36 participating municipalities compete in nine sporting codes and two exhibition games, the latter being women’s soccer and indigenous sport.
Our people in the two host cities of Tlokwe and Matlosana have rolled out the red carpet to you our visitors, and aspire to leave you with lasting sweet memories of what promises to be an enjoyable tournament.
On behalf of all our residents in the District, nearly one million in number, and on my own behalf, I would like to extend our hearty welcome to all the visiting teams and everyone who has traveled from far and near to be with us.
I hope you will find time in between the matches to explore the beauty of our area, its landscape and the hospitality of our friendly people.
I now officially declare the SAMSRA 2010 National Games open.
Kea leboga! Baie dankie! N’diyabonga!
